How to read a match beyond the score
A score tells you who finished ahead. Understanding a match begins with a different question: which chances were created, how were they created and what changed when the game state changed?
Start by separating the result from the process. A team protecting a lead may concede possession deliberately. A late shot count can reflect a trailing side taking risks rather than an even contest throughout. Read the timeline before turning a full-match total into a story.
Next, ask what the dataset actually contains. Event data can describe passes and shots, while tracking data can describe positions and movement. These are different lenses. Do not assume a standard match feed includes off-ball movement simply because a chart looks detailed.
Finally, look for an alternative explanation. Opponent strength, substitutions and the quality of a chance can all change the interpretation. A useful match explanation makes its evidence inspectable and leaves room for uncertainty.
